Splayed Corners on Paths of Travel

AS1428.1 – 2009 requires turning circulation spaces on continuous accessible paths of travel. For a 60 – 90 degree turn the required turning circulation space is 1500 x 1500mm. This can create difficult situations, especially within buildings, such as within corridors, and chew up a significant amount of floor space.

The AS1428.1 – 2009 committee recognised this as an issue and a provision has been included which allows for the internal corner of continuous accessible paths of travel to be splayed.

To demonstrate this the below image shows what the internal splayed corner is allowed to be where:

  • The continuous accessible path of travel is 1000mm wide
  • The turn is 90 degrees
